Participation is through invitation to the university of Texas at Austin or by winning one of a list of participating competitions.
The business plan must be for a seed, start-up, or early stage venture. This is a competition for graduate students; teams with a minority of undergraduates can compete.
- Important Dates
Registration forms are due on April 1, 2012. All teams must submit an electric copy of their business plan and executive summary by April 15, 2012. The final rounds of competition will take place on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin on May 3 - 5, 2012.
- Competition Prizes
The Global Champion will receive $25,000 in cash and $110,000 worth of other inkind prizes and services.
The First Runner-Up will receive $5,000.
The other finalists will receive $3,000.
The semifinalists will receive $2,000.
A number of other specialized prizes will be awarded as well.

This year’s VLIC includes a new Clean Energy Prize sponsored by Wells Fargo where the track winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize. Startups competing in this space are focused on improving energy efficiency, innovating energy delivery and offering energy from alternative fuels for both residential and commercial energy sectors.
