Open to any undergraduate or graduate student from any country in the world.
Submitted projects should be for social innovations that can significantly improve an existing social or environmental problem.
The challenge offers four categories that teams can enter into depending on the development stage of their project: Define, Design, Pilot, and Scale. See the website for descriptions on each of these categories.
- Important Dates
All teams must enter and submit their completed project page by February 13, 2012. Five finalists will be announced on May 14, 2012, and will be invited to Austin, Texas to present their innovations at the Global Awards Event June 8-12, 2012. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the event on June 12.
- Competition Prizes
Grand prize: $50,000
Second prize: $20,000
Third prize: $10,000
Two Expertise Awards totaling $25,000 will be awarded.
17 teams will be selected as People's Choice winners, and will receive $1,000 each.

Judges will evaluate proposals using the following criteria:
- Clarity and significance
- Demonstration of a high probability of success
- Potential impact from winning the Challenge
