- Who's Eligible
All submitted business plans must satisfy the Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy mission and technology portfolio.
Teams must be based in one of the following Western Midwest Region states: Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, North & South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa.
Teams must consist of at least 50% currently enrolled students from universities in the Western Midwest Region.
- Important Dates
Signup forms must be submitted by January 30, 2012. All submission materials, which include the executive summary, IP acknowledgement form, and video pitch are due on March 5, 2012. Finalists will be notified by email on March 25, 2012. These six finalists will compete for the top prizes on April 20, 2012, in Boulder, Colorado. The winning team will be invited to compete in the National Clean Energy Competition in Washington, DC in the summer of 2012.
- Competition Prizes
The first place team will receive $100,000 cash, and 40 hours of NREL commercialization service. The second place and third place teams will also receive 40 hours of NREL commercialization service. The top three teams will all have their fees waived for the NREL Industry Growth Forum.
Additional prizes may be added closer to the competition deadlines.

The competition is part of the Department of Energy's (DOE) National Clean Energy Business Plan Competition focused on increasing clean energy businesses coming out of universities and national labs as well as creating a new generation of entrepreneurs to serve the nation's energy mission.
